1 speed vs 8 speed for MTB dirt jumps and urban?

i am looking to get a new mtb and i want to hit dirt jumps, hit urban bmx stuff, and trail ride. The thing is that i know the type of bike to get its just that some have single speed and others have eight. what is better for what i will be riding?
