Mtb crack arm gaps round the bottom bracket?

help please, my bottom bracket is 68mm with 2 spacers on the chain ring side and one on the other it works fine but the crank arms are different gaps on both sides Form the frame,im guessing the ultimate peddling comes from the gaps being the same on both sides,is this right?help
