Do you suggest the Specialized Crux for me?

I'm getting ready to get a new bike for commuting and the occasional leisure ride.The longest bike ride i can think of will be pushing 50 miles anything more and i understand i should get a full fledged road bike, but the daily ride will be roughly 10 to 15 miles a day. I need the bike to be okay on dirt roads and be durable which is why i'm thinking a CX bike should work. (am i wrong?). I already have an epic or i would invest in a new hard tail for commuting.(i can't justify 2 mtb) Other details that may matter. with a pack i'm roughly 230lbs (will the frame and stock wheels be able to handle commuting?) I don't plan to curb jump when im on the roads i stick to the roads i understand the wheels on the crux couldn't handle that. any advice would be great or if you have advice for another bike that would fit my needs better would be a great help.

How do i lose fat from my glutes?

Im a 19 year old male and its kind of embarrassing for me to have fat on my glutes, and the rest of my body theres hardly any fat. I walk to work everyday about a mile away and im trying to watch what i eat but sometimes i slip because i have nothing else to eat and i just eat whatever my mother buys. I eat beef jerky everyday at work and that's it at work. I do sit ups everyday, push ups with weights, glute exercises as-well but it seems like the rest of my body is in decent shape but all the fat seems to go to my glutes and thighs and i hate that. I do jump-ropes on days im off but it still seems like im getting no where. Theres no fat on my arms, no fat on my calf's and a little fat on my stomach but most fat seems to go to my *** and thighs and i cant seem to make it go away. This is so annoying and im becoming self conscious about it and it makes me feel uncomfortable because i know my associates and others notice as-well. Its really really bothering me, i think i need a meal plan or something.

Rockshox Pilot was a pretty puny looking fork that definitely didn’t fit with the look of the bike. It was however relatively light so it fitted well with the light racing mtb package. Are some clipless pedals OK for clipping in or not clipping in?

I know there are some pedals made by Shimano that are clipless on one side, and on the other side are platform (regular) pedals. So whichever you choose to ride, all you have to do is flip over the pedal to the other side. If you are not sure which type of pedal you want, or are in situations where you need to switch riding styles, I suggest you get the double sided pedals. You get both options!

Question about MTB shoes?

I recently purchased some shimano shoes and clip in pedals. The problem is is that I had surgery years ago on my ankle that has caused reoccurring problems. I was hoping that being clipped in would bother my ankle but it does. My question is what kind of shoes (that don't clip in) would be best for mountain biking. Hi all, what is pepper extract that you find in food? What I mean is, what kind of pepper is it? Is it black, white, bell pepper, chilli pepper or what? Road Bike - wheel set and tyres suggestions?

You can probably go to a 700 road bike set if the bike has 700s or 26s on it now. It will make a real difference compared to the weight and rolling resistance Of a 2.25 or 2,30 off road tire. If it has shocks maybe swap them out for a good light fork at the same time. If shes not using the gears now why not get a single speed hub and save yourself a few bucks and lighten the bike considerably. If not you will need the derailleur and shifter that matches your wheel. .

Is running 12 miles everyday ok?

I've been running for 12 years now. I ran 5 miles a day for 6 days for 10 years, then in 11th year, on top of the 5 miles, 6 days a week I would throw in an occasional 11 miles 2x a month. My 12th year of running, I've ran 10, 14,15 miles 5 days a week, mixing it up. I only began eating raw, organic, vegan in my 12th year & now run 12 miles a day for 6 days a week on top of additional 12 mile MTB rides 2-3x's a week with occasional 32 mile MTB rides (2x's a month on average) & average 4-6 hours on the elliptical a week. My calorie consumption is average of 900 a day of quality whole foods. My average consumption of fat is at 10% & below, carbs 70%, protein is at 15-25%. If I continue on this path will my body be ok? I'm 5'4", weight average 110. I'm told over time my body, joints, organs will go to sh**. Is this true? My goal is to be lean, healthy not anorexic. I take organic supplements galore, wheatgrass, superfoods, acai, pomegranate, multi, RAW protein. I eat lots of grapefruits too. Drink lemon every morning. (A little scared because I'm told the citrus will ruin my esophagus. Oh & running speed is 7-9 min miles & MTB are moderate to hard core inclines. My lady days are normal too. I seem/feel fine. But concerned of my future joints/organs. I did have a problem with ITBS, but I learned to stretch that area better. Can I continue my lifestyle this way with no physical problems? And I'm 34 if that matters.

Mtb which is lighten alloy or alluminium?

As Yon points out, about alloy's, an alloy just means a mix of materials to change the properties of the base material. So there are alum. alloy's, steel alloy's, etc. To find if one is lighter than an other is tough to do as the properties of some alloy's allow for thinner tube diameters than other and this effects the weight of a particular frame. Therefore a steel frame could be lighter or heavier than an alum. one. So to compare one frame to another just by what material it is made of is not cut and dry. However if you are looking at box store bikes know that they are all heavier than the ones at a bike store.

Most bikes that are shop quality will have quick release skewers on both axles. You can see the black cap on the rear skewer, the levers are always placed on the left side.

Need help picking a road bike?

There are a lot of great bikes out there, but not all that many good bike shops. If you have had good service from your Specialized dealer, perhaps you should stick with them. Really, the shop you deal with is more important than the brand of bike. A good shop will listen to what you want to do with your bike and guide you to the bike you need. Touring and racing are very different, if you buy a bike with racing in mind, it won't work for touring, you will need your Sirrus for that. Its fine to buy a bike for the looks, but the fit and the way it handles are much more important. Take me, I have 2 great road bikes. The one that looks better to me is ridden less often than the one whose looks I like less because that one fits me better and feels like it is part of me when I ride it. Make sure you try out the bikes you are thinking about buying, and I don't mean a spin around a parking lot, really try them.

Fuji makes very good bikes. The 8 speed free hub and 80 mm fork travel will be fine. The V brakes are better then cheap disk brakes and are liter and easier to maintain. The price will be the same no matter where you go. You may find a few dollars difference between shops but nothing huge unless they have an old model they want to get rid of.

Why is my MTB suspension fork so stiff?

First off, I have a Fuji Odessa 1.0, which is not really anything special. But I'm not sure if the fork at the front is working right, because, when I'm riding, I don't notice it doing much. Insight is not a bad car, not sporty in the least but good mpg. I don't see many of them around, most people don't like the look of the 2000-2006 version. The new 2010+ models are made to look more like a prius which are common in the south west so no issues there. If it were me I think the best option for cargo room and MPG is a Jetta Sportwagon TDI although with options they are a bit more money than an Insight.

Specialized Sirrus Hybrid Bike was almost a road bike--which is what I wanted--but didn't cost nearly as much. I got it and immediately set about swapping out the handlebars. I have had no problems. I ride it everywhere I go, not just for training and, as such, it gets a lot of wear. But everything seems to remain in order. There is nothing great about this bike, but it does its job well enough. If you want a beater bike then this will do... but get rid of the flat handlebars.

Ok so I'm upgrading shifters so I thought I might as well upgrade to a 9 speed. I measured the spacing for the rear wheel and I got 134.5mm.... Now, is this enough spacing to fit a 9 speed, or better yet a 10 speed cassette?.... Now concerning the derailuer hanger. Are all made to fit the same way on any MTB? Dodge cummings drivetrain issue?

Ok well my friend has a Dodge cummings diesle truck I'd say like mid 90's not the old style but not the new style. The style that had all the tranny issues. Here is my question he's got a bunch of upgrades to the truck it makes I believe 600hp and like 900lbs of tourqe. He runs a 3:55 gear in it and I would think that this gear is not right..shouldnt it be no less then 3:73's? He has gone through a bunch of tranny rebuilds and just yesterday blew his rear end. What is casuing his problems? I think he's making to much tourqe for the drivetrain to handle and when you make that much tourqe you can exspect to break **** all the time...unless you go aftermarket and beef the **** out of it.

Help with Bottom bracket replacement on SCOTT MTB?

You don't mention whether you have removed the drive side crankarm. In order to change the bottom bracket, the cranks have to be removed on both sides. The square hole in the end of your bottom bracket tool is probably for use with a 3/8 or 1/2" ratchet . A hex key will never generate enough leverage to remove the bottom bracket cups, you need to buy or borrow the correct tool to do the job, it is pretty easy to damage the tool or the bottom bracket cups so badly that you won't be able to remove them.

Help with tofu recipe please?

We got some tofu the other day so I tried to make some tofu stirfry... I made some really good tofu stirfry a couple of months ago but I forgot to save the recipe! so I spent forever looking for another recipe. I finally found one that looked okay, but when I made it the tofu was WAY too salty. It said to marinate the tofu in soy sauce and garlic, and I cooked veggies seperately (broccoli, mushrooms, peas, onions). I tried the tofu and it was WAY too salty and marinating it made it look really unappetizing (it looked like beef chunks; I'm a vegetarian and I never was a fan of beef before) I put it in with the veggies hoping they'd dilute the salty taste or something, but I ending up taking it out and storing it in the fridge because it was just wayyyyy too salty to eat. Is there any way to make it taste less salty? Oh, and does anyone have any tried and true good recipes using tofu?

when downnill mountain biking what is the proper body position and what do you do when you pedal? do you stay back or lean forward more? do riders ever use the saddle at all? is it ok to sit down on full suspension bikes if your just cruizing down the track? i used to just stand over the bike legs almost straight till i watched the pros.

What to eat the day before a 50 mile ride and on the day?

Pasta the day before; I prefer fettucini, but any whole grain pasta is good. Stack on some protein, and pound the liquids. Drink a lot the morning of a ride, and try oatmeal or blueberry pancakes/waffles for breakfast. Munch as you ride on Powerbars or such and drink some Gatorade type products while you ride and you'll be fine.

its time to switch to 2nd food. they r a bit thicker, but not much. once he is used to them... a couple weeks, then u can start pureeing ur foods. meats and veggies and fruits. no need for extra sugars, salts or seasonings. he doesnt need them. some babies at a year old dont have teeth yet, but they still gnaw the food with their gums. if he can do the pincer grasp u can give him cooked carrots cut into tiny bites and he can feed himself and u can feed them. i think thats about 9 months.

I'd say read both. They're both wonderfully written stories from Victorian Britain. I think either one would be appropriate for a ten day read because they're accessible and entertaining enough to keep you turning the page without getting too bored. It really depends on what type of literature you prefer. They're both of the gothic genre, but Wilde is a bit more decadent whereas Shelley is dark and brooding. This question alone makes me want to pick up the books again and devour them once more.

I ride a lot of XC and Free ride as well, I have busted a number of KMZ chains some in less then 50miles. they are utter crap now and don't shift that well. BMX even switched away form KMZ now for shadow and wipperman. for your XC bike you will notice a big difference in the shifting with a Sram or shimano chain. I been using Shimano for a while now and have never busted one.

The options are endless, BUT, not the right thing. The cost of doing it would be prohibitive given the value of the bike. Best case new you are looking new Bottom Bracket (20-30) and new crank (75-150) prices given for about bottom end stuff. The other issue is single piece cranks, in my experience, have odd chain lines that do not conform to the standards.

I have an old 2001 GT Aggressor 1.0, been riding it for a few years. A few days ago i started noticing a creaking noise in my pedals. Two things about red and processed meats...?

1. How much do Americans eat red or processed meats? Be it a day, week, month, or year? And 2, I'm adjusting the way I eat. I'm not going into a full blow celebrity diet or whatever. The only thing is that I'm lowering my sugar intake, and staying away from red and processed meats. My main sources of meat now are just poultry and seafood. No beef, pig, etc.

I have celiac but I am not advised to cut oats out of my diet, strangely, and I never have constipation. It may just be me, but I think it would be a smart decision to get a blood test or a biopsy to check. So many people don't realize they have this intolerance. If taking oats out of your diet helped that much, I think switching to a gluten- free diet would be a really smart decision. But again, I say you should get it checked out. My health improved dramatically as soon as I switched.

I'm going to Ray's MTB in Milwaukee this coming Friday, but I'm stuck with a hard decision; rent the Trek Mullet or the Trek Ticket. But what my real question is, which gearing ratio is easiest to pedal with? The Ticket's gear ratio is 36/18 and the Mullet's is 34/17. it's not so complicated. Start working out, you want to do more then just your arms, or you'll make yourself uneven and you'll burn your arms out. Ideally you want to work a muscle group once day per week e.g. shoulders- day one, chest-day two, back-day three, bi's and tri's day four and legs on day five, rest two days, it's important. You don't need to consume large quantities of anything, just eat a sensible and enjoyable wholesome meals. Your at the beginning of your prime of life, think long term, you don't want to go with any program that's too difficult, either diet or exercise, or you'll quit and your mind will record the failure, making your next try more challenging. You also want it to stay enjoyable, so you learn proper form and techniques ( practice is needed) and you allow your brain and body time to catch up to your mind's new ambitions ( your digestion, sleep, energy, mood, etc, will all improve over time, and need to again to keep up, without letting you down. At your age it's also very important to keep things sensible, as your developing still hormonally, and can mess that up for life if you push yourself to hard, so don't be in a rush, you will see slow and steady will get you there!

Will changing my MTB crank-set (22-32-42) help me improve speeds on the road?

I have an 8 speed 11-32 cassette, and thinner lower resistant tires on my 29er, they are quality hybrid tires so I can still ride old railroad grades but no serious off-roading. I ride mostly streets in the foothills (a lot of up and down, and some nice long flats). Most of the bigger hills I can power through and seldom if ever go into my lower gears (1-8). Would a taller crank-set help me get more speed out in the flats? If so what would be a good crank-set for the foothill roads? 1-8 gears are a waste with my current crank-set. Any recommendations or guidance from you more experienced riders would be appreciated.

How much black stuff should be on my MTB's derailleur/cassette/drivetrain if any?

First off, I bought this bike used, and have only ridden it twice. After the first two rides, I hosed it down and used a washcloth on the larger components (frame, rotors, seat post, rims, etc.) then I lubed the chain. I plan to take a brush to the cassette, derailleurs, and chainrings as well as use a Park Tool chain-cleaning kit on the chain after my third ride. But anyhow, I noticed that there is quite a bit of black build-up on the cassette, teeth of the chainrings, derailleur pulleys, as well as the chain itself. Not an insane amount, but more of like a medium-thin coating. Nothing is too "gunked up" or anything, and you can still see the most of the metal through it, but it sure isn't shiny. The cassette has the stuff on it, not completely black and thick, but again, it just is not shiny. The chain has enough on it for a decent amount to rub off on your hand if you brush against it. The derailleur pulleys probably have the most "gunk" on them. Should I have this much, or am I overdoing the lube? I use Rock 'N' Roll Extreme if that makes a difference. Also, anything more cleaning I should be doing? Any tips? This is a pretty high-end bike, and I'd just like to keep it as clean as possible. Thanks.

How do I make a proper American style beef burger?

The tastiest way to cook burgers is on the BBQ, but pan frying works well too. For each burger, use 6-8 oz. of ground beef. The best burgers do contain some fat, so try to purchase chopped/minced beef that is 75-80% lean. One pound of meat is 16 oz. so just divide it in half for large 8 oz. burgers and in thirds for smaller burgers which will be just shy of 6 oz. Shape the meat into patties. Season each side of the patty with salt, preferably Kosher or sea salt and black pepper. GT Avalanche 3.0 XC Hardtail was a very entry level bike. Cost me �325. If you break something on it, it's probably cheap to replace if you replace with like. The bike is easily ood enough in the suplied spec to keep you interested and make you upgrade it. The frame has a lot of people saying good things. If I had the choice again I'd buy it again, but I would haggle those terrible pedals from the offset. the rest you can replace at your leisure. I'd have no issues recommending this bike to a friend.

What are the repercussions for my active lifestyle on my body?

I've been running for 12 years now. I ran 5 miles a day for 6 days for 10 years, then in 11th year, on top of the 5 miles, 6 days a week I would throw in an occasional 11 miles 2x a month. My 12th year of running, I've ran 10, 14,15 miles 5 days a week, mixing it up. I only began eating raw, organic, vegan in my 12th year & now run 12 miles a day for 6 days a week on top of additional 12 mile MTB rides 2-3x's a week with occasional 32 mile MTB rides (2x's a month on average) & average 4-6 hours on the elliptical a week. My calorie consumption is average of 900 a day of quality whole foods (Organic/Vegetarian/Macrobiotic). My average consumption of fat is at 10% & below, carbs 70%, protein is at 15-25%. If I continue on this path will my body be ok? I'm 5'4", weight average 110. I'm told over time my body, joints, organs will go to sh**. Is this true? My goal is to be lean, healthy not anorexic. I take organic supplements galore, wheatgrass, superfoods, acai, pomegranate, multi, RAW protein. I eat lots of grapefruits too. Drink lemon every morning. (A little scared because I'm told the citrus will ruin my esophagus. Oh & running speed is 7-9 min miles & MTB are moderate to hard core inclines. My lady days are normal too. I seem/feel fine. But concerned of my future joints/organs. I did have a problem with ITBS, but I learned to stretch that area better. Can I continue my lifestyle this way with no physical problems? I'm even considering increasing my mileage/physical activity. And I'm 34 if that matters.

$200 will only buy a discount or big box store piece of junk. I'd much rather have a quality used bicycle from craigslist. Look for major brand names...Raleigh, Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, etc. Avoid any used bike originally sold through Wally World, K-Mart, Target, etc.

Is this a good bike to buy?

It's probably ok for the price. You could find a much better used bike for about the same price I think. This type of bike is generally a cheaper, budget-oriented bike so it has cheaper less reliable parts on it. They are fine for riding around town, but if you try to do serious mountain biking they probably won't hold up. A lot of people say never to buy the cheaper bikes like this, but they are fine for casual use, or even pretty constant use if you just don't expect it to last for a long time. Most people are not riding off road on real mountain bike trails so these bikes are fine.

I want to buy a freeride mtb and i want a sweet budget bike?

It is really hard to find a really good CHEAP free ride bike. This is likely due to the component mix that free ride bikes usually have: a long tough suspension and light-ish components. You should take a good long look at your budget and figure out if you would like to go used or new. If you absolutely have to have a new bike GT and Giant have some lower priced models but if you go used, I personally would look at Santa Cruz. Good Luck!

Good simple recipe for chicken empanadas?

Help. I have made beef empanadas before but never chicken. After some research on-line I've found a ton of recipes with too many ingredients and they all seem to call for hard boiled eggs. This makes me question the entire recipe. I've had chicken empanadas before that were made by a Puerto Rican family member and there wasn't any egg in them. Maybe she cut it so small I couldn't tell. Can you eat molded beef jerky?

Basically my mother makes her own beef jerky. She marinates the slices of beef then leaves it out in the sun for it to dry. I use to eat these a lot before watching the process. Recently I saw that the beef were starting to mold which completely disgusted me therefore, stopped me from eating them since. Of course, I pointed this out to my mom and she insists that it's ok. The diarrhea is because of the change in her diet. It wasn't a gradual switch. So if it persists you need to put her on a special home diet of cooked chicken and rice or ground beef with elbows and feed 3 small servings a day for a few days and then gradually add her regular food to this mixture. I don't know the size of your dog so give her enough to satisfy her but not too much.

Tasty Slow Cooker Recipes?

I am looking for a really tasty slow cooker recipe. I have some friends coming over and I couldn't be bothered to cook at the last minute so thought i'd stick the cooker on. So far i've tried curry and those meal bases from the supermarket which weren't that great and i've tried a beef in flower with veg which was okay and a sweet and sour pork with cranberry which was awesome.
