Starting mtb downhill at 16?

im nearly 16 and really want to start downhill mtbing i have lots of experience in downhill and small jumps and im wondering if i could start at my age if i get the right stuff eg second hand downhill bike etc i dont no of any clubs near me tho so dont no how i could get into races etc im in N.Ireland ....... cheers
